In your first two years, you'll get a basic foundation in mathematics, natural sciences, computing, writing, the humanities, and social sciences. Our program builds on this, with students gaining theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and the ability to apply systems thinking to problems.

Capstone Courses
These projects encourage students to think critically, solve problems, and develop new skills. You'll work on two-semester team projects sponsored by one industry on contemporary questions that are complex, often ill-defined and hard to tackle. They produce an initial design solution, write a journal-quality technical paper, present their projects to the faculty, and compete in national senior design competitions, where past students have found great success.
INCOSE Certification
The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) has approved the BS in Systems and Industrial Engineering for “academic equivalency”. This means that students who earn a BS in Systems and Industrial Engineering at Mason, and who score well enough in certain required courses (taken during the effective dates of equivalency), can bypass the INCOSE systems engineering knowledge exam when applying for ASEP (Associate Systems Engineering Professional) or CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional) certification. We are only the second undergraduate program to have received this academic equivalency.

Students must earn scores of 85% or better in each of the following courses to be eligible to bypass the knowledge exam: SYST 210 Systems Design, SYST 220 Dynamical Systems I, SYST 330 Systems Methods, SYST 371 Systems Engineering Management, SYST 490/495 Senior Design Project I/II.
