Dominion Energy will provide 75 megawatts of wind energy to the commonwealth through Apex Clean Energy, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said Friday at George Mason University’s Arlington Campus.

Another 345 megawatts will come from solar energy projects, for a total of 420 megawatts of renewable energy, the equivalent of powering more than 100,000 homes, Northam said.

The agreement is part of the goal set forth by Northam in an executive order that 30 percent of the electricity consumed by state agencies and institutions in Virginia will come from renewable sources by 2022.

“This is the largest commitment that any state has made to buy renewable energy,” Northam told a group of elected officials, environmental leaders and Mason community members.

Joining Northam were Dominion Energy CEO Tom Farrell and Apex CEO Mark Goodwin, as well as Business Network for Offshore Wind Executive Director Liz Burdock, Georgetown Climate Center Executive Director Vicki Arroyo, Charlottesville Climate Collaborative Executive Director Susan Kruse, and other environmental and political leaders.
